Gregory SmithGeeks of Doom gets the scoop from Gregory Smith, star of The Seeker: The Dark Is Rising, on filming in Romania as well as his character’s possible destiny with the Dark Side.

In The Seeker, Smith — the 24-year-old actor best known his four-year stint as teenager Ephram Brown on TV’s Everwood — plays Max Stanton, older brother to Will, the last of the Old Ones who is seeking six signs to use to battle forces of evil.

The Seeker: The Dark Is Rising opens in theaters today.

****

Geeks of Doom: You’ve played some seriously dramatic roles in your career. What drew you to an epic fantasy film like THE SEEKER?

Gregory Smith: It was a favorite book of my brother’s growing up. Also, Max is the oldest brother — as I am — so it gave me a chance to put to use all of my big brother antics I developed over the years.

GoD: The film centers around Will Stanton (played by Alexander Ludwig), a young boy who finds out he has an important destiny. You play Will’s older brother Max. What’s Max’s destiny?

GS: Max is still trying to figure out his destiny like most young adults.

GoD: Max and Will come from a family of 10 children. What kind of relationship do Max and Will have?

Gregory SmithGS: Max has been away at college for a few years, so when he returns home he comes back, takes over the big brother role, kicks him out of his room, etc.

GoD: THE SEEKER focuses on the battle between the Dark and Light forces. I’ve read that Max might be a little bit on the Dark side. Is that true?

GS: Yes — he is the experimental sort.

GoD: There’s a time-travel sequence in the film. What’s Max’s role in that part of the journey?

GS: Getting his butt kicked by a 13-year-old.

GoD: What was it like filming THE SEEKER in Romania? What scene was your favorite to take part in?

GS: Favorite scene: Fight/time travel sequence. Romania was a lot of fun to film in, but any time you’re that far away from home you get homesick. It is hard.

GoD: In your last few roles (TV’s EVERWOOD, BOOK OF LOVE) you not only played a teenager, but you looked like one too — even though you were years older than your characters. In THE SEEKER, you look much older — even sporting facial hair — that I almost didn’t recognize you. Did you find it difficult to transition from playing younger roles?

GS: Thank you for the compliment. As an actor, that is the ultimate goal when taking on any role — to become unrecognizable.

And now, 5 Random Geek Qs …

1. Lightsabers or blasters? lightsabers
2. Cameras: film or digital? digital
3. Hockey or soccer? soccer
4. Fantasy or science fiction? science fiction
5. Who would win in a fight, Chucky or Leprechaun? How many leprechauns?

Thanks so much, Gregory, for taking the time out to answer our questions here at Geeks of Doom!

  1. Nice interview, guys! My best friend is hounding me to go see this with her, so I might just give it a shot. Last time I got suckered into a kids fantasy novel turned movie was Eragon and… yah. That made me cry on the inside.
