Universal and Strike Entertainment are in negotiations to acquire the rights to remake John Carpenter‘s They Live.
If you recall, They Live is the cult classic that follows Roddy Piper and his sunglasses around as they witness the truth about aliens and their preexisting residence on the planet Earth. It’s also well-known for its memorable scene in which Piper goes to great lengths to prove that he’s telling the truth to Keith David.
Since this is still in the negotiations stage, no names are attached to star, write, or direct, but surely those will come soon enough. Producing the movie will be Marc Abraham and Eric Newman of Strike Entertainment with Shep Gordon and John Carpenter of Les Mougins (the original film’s current rights holder) will executive produce.
Strike Entertainment’s remake of Dawn of the Dead might lead people to believe that They Live might just be in good hands here. They’re also handling the remakes of Carpenter’s other classic, The Thing.

I absolutely love this movie. I recently watched it on-demand with my right-wing-extremist father-in-law (after I described it as a “monster movie”). You could actually hear the ice crack in the room during the scene with Reagan.
It’s such a classic in tone and form, I can’t really see a remake being warranted, however.

This really is a great movie and I look forward to this crew doing a remake, if the Thing turns out well, then they will most def. have my vote for They Live…also for those who don’t know, the “Cripple Fight” of Southpark fame was taken almost exactly from this flick.
