The stars of the upcoming Iron Man 2 made a highly welcomed appearance today at the San Diego Comic-Con, along with producer Kevin Feige and director Jon Favreau, to debut the first footage from the film.
Check out the description of the footage, along with images of the panelists, including Robert Downey Jr, Scarlet Johansson, Don Cheadle, and Sam Rockwell, here below.
The stars talked a bit about their experiences making the new movie, like Johansson’s mixed martial arts training for her role as Black Widow. Cheadle said he tried to make Rhodey his own, but he also drew from Terrance Howard’s performance in the first movie. Downey Jr, of course, keep everybody laughing with his reactions to audience questions.
In regards to the planned Avengers movie, Favreau confirmed that he would be involved in the film — which will include the Iron Man character — in some way, avoiding the question as to whether he would be directing it. Favreau also said that he’s been keeping tabs on the other Marvel film, Thor, directed by Kenneth Branagh, since Thor will also be included in the Avengers film.
Footage Description
It opens with Tony Stark in sunglasses in the Iron Man suit sans helmet sitting in the hole of the giant Randy’s Donuts shop structure, eating something. On the ground we see Samuel L. Jackson as Nick Fury. “I’m gonna have to ask you to exit the donut,” Fury shouts up to him. Next, the two of them are sitting in a booth at the shop talking. Stark jokes to Fury about where he should look at him, at his eye or at his eyepatch. He wonders if Fury is just a figment of his imagination. Fury replies that he is very real, much to Stark’s disappointment.
Next, Tony Stark is in a suit, sitting at a Senate hearing. Gary Shandling plays the Senator heading up the inquiry as to whether Stark is in possession of a specialized weapon. Stark insists that’s he’s not, that his Iron Man suit is purely a high-tech prosthesis, though the Senator believes that it’s a weapon that should be turned over to the American people. Starks stands his ground, saying that he will not give over the suit. “I am Iron Man, the suit and I are one,” he says. He then says that turning it over would turn him into either an indentured servant or a prostitute, then he mocks the Senator by making a prostitution joke.
Then Lt. James Rhodes enters the hearing, much to Stark’s surprise. Stark then tells the Senator, “You’re welcome” and that what he’s doing is “working.” “You’re safe, America’s safe, I’m you’re nuclear deterrent… I have successfully privatized world peace, ” he says while flashing two peace signs to the people in the crowd at the hearing, who stand and give him an ovation. “I tried to play ball with this ass clowns,” Stark tells the crowd. “Fuck you, Mr stark, fuck you,” the Senator responds.
Next, we see someone making someone forging something and building something, with magazines and newspaper clippings of Tony Stark on the wall in front of him. We hear a voiceover of a Russian accent. It’s Ivan Venko, aka Whiplash (played by Mickey Rourke). We see he’s handling something like Stark’s heart device, which we then see incorporated into his Whiplash suit. As Whiplash, he walks towards an injured Stark (not in a suit), lashing with his special whips.
Flash to Iron Man flying through the night sky, being attacked by some kind of missiles.
The final scene is of Rhodey at the military base; Justin Hammer (Sam Rockwell) comes to him to show him some firepower, like an M24 shotgun. “I’ll take it,” Rhodey says. “All of it.” Flash to Rhodey in the War Machine suit firing his weapons.
