Week of Geek: San Diego Comic Con International 2010

SDCC 2010: Green Lantern Panel: Ryan ReynoldsThe cast and crew of the Green Lantern movie was on hand at the 2010 San Diego Comic-Con to discuss the upcoming film, due out in 2011. Also, the very first footage from the film was show (see description of it here below).

Chief Creative Officer of DC Comics Geoff Johns, decked out in Green Lantern gear, was introduced first to get things rolling and said the week he spent on set was the best experience of his life. Considering Johns’ history working with legendary director Richard Donner, that’s saying a lot.

“When I first worked for Richard Donner, we talked about making Green Lantern and one of the producers said ‘Can we do the movie without the ring?’ and right there I thought: “There’s never going to be a Green Lantern movie,” said Johns, who added that it’s been incredible to see what director Martin Campbell and crew have done.

The costume itself wasn’t shown, which Campbell described as being lines of musculature. “A lot of thought has been given to it and it is a work of progress,” Campbell said.

Many of the classic Green Lantern Corps characters were confirmed to be in the movie such as Kilowog, Salaak, Bzzd, Tomar-Re, Stel, Green Man, and many more, according to a producer on the film who said all 3,600 Corps members would be shown on planet Oa.

Ryan Reynolds said he wasn’t familiar with the character prior to working on the film but now sees himself in it for at least two or three more films. While the studio pursued Reynolds, he did do screen tests for the role.

“They made me work for it,” Reynolds said. “Martin took me upstairs and showed me what the world looked like and the suit looked like and the tables had turned. Then I was begging them for it.”

Reynolds did seem genuinely dedicated to the role and stated that kept the Green Lantern set ring for the last six months. He also recited the Lantern oath after a young questioner asked him what it felt like.

Peter Sarsgaard, who plays Dr. Hector Hammond, said he wasn’t aware his character’s head would be so large and heavy. The Cranium gets bigger as the movie goes on apparently.

Also appearing on the panel was Mark Strong (Sinestro) and Blake Lively, who will portray Hal’s love interest Carrol Ferris.

Footage Description

The studio debuted a teaser trailer that opened with a green ball of light and a voiceover explains the power of the ring and what it can do for its bearer. It then leads into a montage of shots, including one of Hal Jordan (Ryan Reynolds) being beat up by three men in an alleyway. Hal doubles over and returns an epic right cross delivered by a huge glowing fist created by the ring. We also see images of the body of Green Lantern Abin Sur being dissected in Hector Hammond’s laboratory. At the end, we hear Hal’s in voiceover say the Lantern Oath.
