Apple Lands Musical Take On Charles Dickens’ ‘A Christmas Carol’ Starring Ryan Reynolds, Will Ferrell

A new adaptation of the Charles Dickens classic A Christmas Carol is on the way. This one will be a musical, with Ryan Reynolds and Will Ferrell set to star.

Now this latest take on A Christmas Carol has a home. After a bidding war which included Netflix, Warner Bros., and Paramount all making offers to acquire the movie, it was Apple who ultimately won the project and is now in final negotiations to complete the acquisition. And it sounds like they dropped some big money on the table to pass all other bidders.

Variety shares that someone familiar with the bidding war says that Apple ultimately won because they “blew everyone out of the water” with an offer at the end of September. It’s not known at the moment exactly what this offer was, but looking at some of the paydays those making the movie could be getting gives us an idea.

According to the report, Reynolds and Ferrell are set to score huge paydays as both stars and producers. It’s not clear exactly how much they’ll be making, but before Apple came in with their winning offer, when Netflix was still heavily involved in the bidding, Ferrell was likely to make over $25 million and Reynolds is said to have been looking for as much as $35 million.

The movie will be written and directed by Sean Anders and John Morris, who co-wrote Sex Drive, Horrible Bosses 2, Daddy’s Home and its sequel, and Instant Family. Anders directed all of those movies, as well. Anders and Morris will also be cashing a nice pay check, expected to be in the $10 million to $15 million range.

The report notes that the reason that these paydays are so high, is because movies on streaming services like Apple’s upcoming Apple TV+ don’t get theatrical runs like big Hollywood studio releases get. Usually stars like Reynolds and Ferrell would receive a cut of the box office profits in addition to what they were paid initially, so streaming deals such as this include a larger up front dollar amount.

Reynolds has been doing extremely well with the streaming deals lately. As Variety points out he also scored a cool $27 million for the Michael Bay flick 6 Underground and around $20 million (plus backend compensation) for Red Notice, both of which are being released by Netflix.

No word yet on when we might see Reynolds and Ferrell’s A Christmas Carol released.
