We saw all the photoshop’d jobs of Henry Cavill as Superman when the news of his casting in Zack Snyder’s Man Of Steel was announced, but do you remember when Anne Hathaway was cast as Catwoman in The Dark Knight Rises? People couldn’t wait to get a look at the actress in tight black latex as the popular Batman villainess.
Now, Warner Bros. has released the first official photo of Hathaway in the film via the official The Dark Knight Rises website. Check out the full, larger version of the photo here below.
Hollywood Life had a scoop back in June claiming that Hathaway’s outfit in the film would be “more like a robber” and “more tactical, like the comic book, than the previous Batman movies.” They also said that she’d be sporting the goggles, which she is wearing in this photo, though they seem more like a high-tech Batman gadget than the traditional Catwoman eyewear.
From the photo, you can see the actress is in some kind of tight black outfit, but of a more practical nature, unlike previous film incarnations of Catwoman that went for the sexy look. It’s possible that she’s not in full-on Catwoman mode in this photo and there’s still more to be seen of her final outfit. The file on the site was labeled “selina_kyle” so it’s possible, though I hope this isn’t another Harvey Dent/Two-Face situation like in The Dark Knight where Selina Kyle never truly becomes the full-on Catwoman character. (I guess I’ll have to wait for my Batman expert MK2FAC3 to wake up this morning and analyze this new photo.)
I think they’re going to miss the mark for the most part. Â Now granted I’ve read many-a comic and watched the cartoons so I’m biased toward these incarnations.
If Catwoman is to be a villainess then in my opinion the creators have already missed the point.  She started out as a misguided heroin, that’s what Batman liked about her and why he has compassion for her plight.  She’s an animal activist to the core, the thievery was a means of funding her animal rescue ventures.  Their conflict is really just a matter of perspective, she’s committing crimes to save lives, but crime is crime. That’s what’s so enthralling about Batman & Catwoman; he is a vigilante with a heart to stop crime’s against the powerless, and she is a thief with the same heart. It’s such a great dichotomy! Her character changes a bit later, but in the beginning she is noble, caring, driven, kind, and desperate to stop the horrors she knows is being inflicted on innocents.
There is so much to her character, and I don’t think Anne Hathaway can do justice to any (but maybe Halley Berry’s) incarnation of Selina Kyle – Catwoman.
One last thing, about the hair: it really should be blond. Â She’s dyes it, and if you’ve read the comics you know why that minor point is of some significance.
Better candidates for the role (in my opinion): Ali Larter, Ellen Barkin
