James Wan‘s The Conjuring expanded its story with its first spinoff Annabelle. The film did not redefine the horror genre the same way that The Conjuring did, but it was still enough of a success to warrant a sequel. Now, Warner Bros. is giving us a first look at Annabelle 2 from director David F. Sandberg. That name may sound familiar to you if you recently watched Lights Out, which was also produced by Wan. That film, though relatively small, got some high praise for being a frightful experience.
Check out the teaser trailer here below for Annabelle 2.
The teaser doesn’t have much to offer — it is a teaser after all — but it does set a creepy tone when Miranda Otto walks in holding a crucifix in hopes of exorcising the dark spirit out of the Annabelle doll. But when she hears those bone-cracking noises, she drops that crucifix, and something truly frightening happens. Let’s just hope one of these Annabelle films will have a family figure out that the ultra creepy doll is probably better off with someone who has dealt with evil spirits before.
Again, the first film really didn’t offer much in terms of horror and fell short of meeting the kinds of expectations that The Conjuring had set. But with Sandberg at the helm for the sequel, I suspect things will be a little bit different and hopefully be the kind of horror flick that the first Annabelle was supposed to be.
Annabelle 2 stars Miranda Otto, Talitha Bateman, Stephanie Sigman, and Anthony LaPaglia. It is currently scheduled for a May 19, 2017, release.
Here’s the official plot synopsis:
In Annabelle 2, several years after the tragic death of their little girl, a dollmaker and his wife welcome a nun and several girls from a shuttered orphanage into their home, soon becoming the target of the dollmaker’s possessed creation, Annabelle.
