The teaser trailer for Star Wars: The Force Awakens is one of the most-talked-about trailers in history. Fans are dissecting every second of the footage shown, hoping to decipher any drop information on secretive director J.J. Abrams’ upcoming sequel.
The trailer left plenty for everyone to talk about, including the reveal of a new lightsaber being ignited by the Sith Kylo Ren. Unlike the original trilogy, which featured a standard saber, and the prequels, which had Sith apprentice Darth Maul wielding a double-edged lightsaber, the new film will debut a new crossguard lightsaber that has a broadsword-type of design. But what is the purpose and functionality of the crossguard component?
