The teaser trailer for Star Wars: The Force Awakens is one of the most-talked-about trailers in history. Fans are dissecting every second of the footage shown, hoping to decipher any drop information on secretive director J.J. Abrams’ upcoming sequel.
The trailer left plenty for everyone to talk about, including the reveal of a new lightsaber being ignited by the Sith Kylo Ren. Unlike the original trilogy, which featured a standard saber, and the prequels, which had Sith apprentice Darth Maul wielding a double-edged lightsaber, the new film will debut a new crossguard lightsaber that has a broadsword-type of design. But what is the purpose and functionality of the crossguard component?
On a recent episode of The Colbert Report, Stephen Colbert defended the design. And in a latest installment of their “Movie Fights” video podcast, the folks at Screen Junkies discussed whether the new lightsaber is awesome or useless. You can check out the podcast here below.
The Movie Fights gang start talking about the Star Wars: The Force Awakens trailer early on in the show, but the “FIGHT 2: New Star Wars lightsaber: like or dislike?” comes in at 10:55.
This lightsaber has sparked such a fury of parodies, that it almost neck-and-neck now with the Kim Kardashian naked-butt photos littering the internet. The crossguard lightsaber has been morphed into a tennis racket, menorah, Swiss army knife, Star of David, and even a penis, and there doesn’t seem to be any end to what can be done with this design.
My favorite rendition is definitely the “Sith Army Knife” seen here below (via Reddit):
