BLADE: THE TV SERIES (2006)
Written by veteran comic pens, Geoff Johns and David S. Goyer; Starring Kirk Jones, a Brooklyn, New York native (Brooklynites, holla!)
I’ve always been a big fan of Blade. He’s the consummate outsider, that Eastwood-esque stranger who comes to town and kicks everyone’s ass. So far, the Spike TV original series has been doing a decent job of capturing the tone and feel of the trilogy of movies, also written by Goyer. Kirk Jones easily fills the brooding, guttural shoes of Wesley Snipes, and adds a dimension of vulnerability to the role I always thought the movies lacked. I’m about five episodes deep and, barring a few unavoidable soap opera motifs (revisiting plot-points, slow-building chemistry), it’s been pretty enjoyable.

PSYCH (2006)
After watching the pilot of PSYCH, a new series on the USA network, I was totally hooked on this show. It centers on slacker Shawn Spencer (James Roday), whose superior observation skills are so extraordinary that hes able to fool the local police detectives into believing hes a psychic. Shawn teams up with his friend and unwilling sidekick Gus (Dulé Hill) to open a detective agency called “Psych” then pretends to use psychic abilities in order to solve crimes. Corbin Bernsen plays his disapproving police officer father, and often appears in flashbacks showing how Shawn developed his special abilities. PSYCH is clever and funny as hell. Hopefully, the series will get a long run.

HELL’S KITCHEN (2006)
Ive been watching Hells Kitchen, which just finished for the season, and which is awesome. It is awesome because it stars Gordon Ramsay. Hes one of the UKs top chefs and is known for being a complete bastard. And he can be a complete bastard. And when he is being a complete bastard, he is completely fucking correct. Think about that the next time your punk ass wantsta be a big time Food Network Star. You want the truth? You can’t handle the truth: that’s how real-life chefs roll.

THE NEW ADVENTURES OF FLASH GORDON-The Complete Series (1979)
Say what you will about Saturday morning cartoons, the first sixteen half-hour episodes of The New Adventures of Flash Gordon were the real thing: a serial describing the arrival of Flash Gordon on Mongo and his attempts to overthrow Ming The Merciless. With a plot largely scripted by Samuel Peeples (who wrote the second pilot for Star Trek) and a lot of lush Rotoscope-driven animation (which is based on the movements of live actors), this is a cut way above standard children’s fare. There is some rough to be taken with the smooth — like the battle sequences in the original Battlestar Galactica, some things repeat over and over again — but the general effect is magical. I hadn’t seen this in over 25 years, but I knew I had to buy it when I saw that the DVDs are available. I’m glad I did.

THE DARK CRYSTAL (1982)
I know, I know, I am 34. Trouble is, you would be hard pressed to see so much physically wrought sculpture and invented aesthetic in any film these days. Digital effects may be the brush for most creative film-like imaginations today, but to fathom that all of this film is man made and puppeted just blows the mind. The Dark Crystal took YEARS to realize. YEARS. Gelflings, Poddlings, The Evil Skeksis and The Gentle Mystics, Augra? The Garthem?
Magic. Jim Henson unbound by reality.
