In last night’s episode of The Colbert Report, host Stephen Colbert was presented with Captain America‘s shield.
A letter from Marvel editor-in-chief Joe Quesada, which the self-confessed comic book-loving Colbert read on-air, stated that the late patriot Steve Rogers bequeathed his mighty shield to the comedy talk-show host in his Will.
A video of the segment can be seen here, where upon accepting the “indestructable Wakandan vibranium” shield, Colbert said, “Cap? I hope I can make you proud.”
During the Marvel Civil War event, the iconic super soldier led a group of former superheroes who opposed the recent Superhuman Registration Act, a law which required anyone with superpowers to unmask and register their identities with the government. After months of battling against the Iron Man-led pro-registration forces caused millions of dollars in property damage and military costs as well as threats to public safety, Rogers surrendered to authorities, ending the war. In a shocking turn of events, Rogers was shot and killed by a sniper on Wednesday on the steps of the Federal Courthouse in New York City.
