A new hope for Star Trek fans (See what I did there? Ha!) to look forward to has surfaced.
Movies.com has learned that Simon Pegg (Shaun of the Dead, Hot Fuzz) has confirmed that not only is he signed on to play Scotty for the much-anticipated “re-boot” of the franchise, but he’s signed on to play Scotty in THREE movies. This would confirm the dedication to reviving Start Trek and renovating it.
The real question is, will Star Trek XI be as good or as successful as the others? Will Trekkies take to the lack of familiar faces in major roles and will they enjoy the new (yet still familiar) faces that will fill their beloved characters?
We’ll see soon enough. Star Trek XI is scheduled for May 8th, 2009 and is directed by J.J. Abrams (Lost, MI:III). It also stars Chris Pine (Smokin’ Aces) as Kirk, Zachary Quinto (Heroes) as Spock, Eric Bana (Munich, Troy) as Nero, John Cho (American Pie, Harold and Kumar) as Sulu, and even some oldies like Leonard Nimoy (…Star Trek) as… well, Spock.
Star Trek XI is scheduled for release in theaters on May 8, 2009.
Certainly interesting news, but it doesn’t necessarily mean that there will be three new Trek movies in the future. I remember reading, after the first Austin Powers movie was a hit, that Mike Meyers had signed a contract to appear in 10 of those movies.
Thank god they stopped when they were ahead.

Three films? Well, let’s see how the first one is.

It is going to suck because they are not doing anything original. They are just taking the best Star Trek series and revamping it with new movie making techniques and new actors.
I like JJ Abrams and I am sure this film will be entertaining but as far as a new Trek saga I am sure we will be disappointed.

Very skeptical about this, a new Kirk!?. I’ve always thought they should accidentally warp to another part of the galaxy where the Empire is and start a Star Wars vs. Star Trek war. If they can do Alien v Predator and Freddy v Jason, why not? It would at least make a shitload of money.

Get real, it’ll suck because JJ Abrams has interesting ideas that never get past that. He may be good at coming up with a pitch but turning it into a good story should be left to someone with skill. Think I’m being too harsh? Look at his credits.
