The Surrogates is a very popular independent comic — written by Robert Venditti and drawn by artist Brett Weldele — from Top Shelf Productions that’s being adapted into a major motion picture from Disney (see Bruce Willis Signs On For ‘The Surrogates’).
Joining an already very strong lead in Bruce Willis (Die Hard, Pulp Fiction) is Ving Rhames (Pulp Fiction, Dawn of the Dead), Radha Mitchell (Silent Hill, Finding Neverland), Rosamund Pike (Pride and Prejudice, The Libertine), and Ned Vaughn (Frost/Nixon) — making this a movie to keep your eye on!
The Surrogates takes place in 2054 and tells a story of a time where no one leaves their home. Their lives are lived by “surrogates” — which are basically robot clones — that appear to others as a young, perfect version of you. At some point, “terrorists” decide that life needs to be lived by people like it once was and pledge to make things as they were, while two detectives need to try and stop this setback from happening.
Jonathan Mostow is directing the film and it’s being written by Michael Ferris and John Brancato, all three assuming the same roles that they had on Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines. Mostow also directed U-571, while Ferris and Brancato also wrote The Game and Terminator 4‘s working script. It’s being produced by David Hoberman and Todd Lieberman of Mandeville Film as well as Max Handelman and Elizabeth Banks. (Yes, that Elizabeth Banks from The 40-Year Old-Virgin and the upcoming Zack and Miri Make A Porno.)
Production on film — which will be released through Touchstone — was originally set to begin in February, but was reset for a late April start. No further details or release dates are known at this time.
