X-Files 2Chris Carter and Frank Spotnitz participated in an audience Q&A session for X-Files: I Want To Believe at the New York Comic Con on Friday night.

As has been the case throughout the promotion for the upcoming X-Files film sequel, which sees the return of as FBI Agents Fox Mulder (David Duchovny) and Dana Scully (Gillian Anderson), major plot details were kept under wraps. Also, no new footage was shown (only the previously released theatrical trailer). But Carter (producer, director, co-writer, and series creator) and Spotnitz (co-writer, producer) did offer up a few tidbits. Here are some highlights from the event:

When does the film take place and what type of story is it?
The film sequel takes place six years after television series ended, said Carter, who explained that it’s “not an alien mythology story, but is a standalone scary story focusing on Mulder and Scully, who they are, where they are in their lives, it’s personal in a way the series rarely could be.”

Will the audience be surprised by the evolution of Mulder and Scully’s relationship?
“I don’t know,” was the answer given.

On Scully’s family…
None of Scully’s family members will appear in the movie, but there might be references to Scully’s family in it.

Who’s idea was the title of the movie?
Carter says he will take credit for the idea (not the movie studio — Twentieth Century Fox). Carter came up with the poster on Mulder’s wall which has the “I Want To Believe” saying on it.

X-Files 2Will the eventual DVD release contain “extra footage that’s maybe unrated”?
They don’t know exactly what will be on the DVD right now, though there most likely will be bonus features and the Blu-Ray edition will “be very cool.”

On the future of The X-Files franchise…
Spotnitz said that DC/Wildstorm will announce tomorrow the launch of a new line of X-Files comic books. It’s doubtful that more films will be made, because they don’t think the stars would return and they wouldn’t want to do it without them, though if the movie is successful there could be an opportunity to continue the life of The X-Files.

How about that supposed steamy sex scene that David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson alleged wanted cut?
“That’s a rumor,” Spotnitz said, while Carter joked, “It’s in there.” Later on, an audience member asked if any fan fiction inspired the rumored sex scene. Carter said it’s a PG-13 movie and that the fan fiction out there is way too racy for it.

Will Mitch” Pileggi or the Frank Black character be in the film?
Frank Black, who was played by Lance Henriksen in the TV series, will not be in the film; Carter joked that Mitch Pileggi would be in the Mulder/Scully steamy sex scene.

Who is the father of Scully’s baby?
“It’s Mulder,” confirmed Spotnitz.
