Week of Geek: Indiana Jones

“Snakes. Why’d it have to be snakes?”

Lego Indiana Jones screen capsYou step through the ancient tomb slowly but surely, making sure not to step on a single crack — you’re being careful not to set off the inevitable slew of booby traps as you make your way towards the plinth sporting the Aztec-like idol. As you get close you prepare a bag of sand purposefully weighted to match the idol, although you remove a handful as you get a closer inspection of the relic.

As you gingerly move the idol, you slip the bag of sand in its place quickly, bracing yourself for the imminent death trap”¦ that doesn’t come. You give a wry smile as you turn around and swagger out of the room, until the sound of the grinding stone trap mechanism quickly wipes the smirk off your face, and the sandbag recedes into the pedestal. Uh-oh.

Yeap! Dust off that bullwhip and leather jacket”¦ because Indy is back!

The LEGO series of video games for the Xbox 360, PS3, and Wii have done extremely well so far with the LEGO Star Wars series. The perfect blend of action, puzzles, and humour made sure they were a hit with all age groups, as well as adding enough in-jokes into the games to make movie geeks chuckle with glee.

And this is what will make LEGO Indiana Jones: The Original Adventures a hit — the series already being family-orientated, action-packed, and genuinely funny throughout, a LEGO outing on all major consoles is marketing genius.

We can also expect more of the same when LEGO Batman graces our consoles later in the year to tie-in with the release of The Dark Knight.

In the spirit of preview goodness I’m going to cast a look at the three movies, and let you in on some of my favourite Indy moments I’m most looking forward to when LEGO Indy’s gaming adventures are available to us on June 6th here in Europe:

“¢ Escaping the impending boulder death
“¢ Club Obi Wan escape
“¢ Plane + Mountain + Liferaft = Awesome
“¢ Temple of Doom mine cart sequence
“¢ The various horse and motorbike chases
“¢ Grail temple booby traps

There are a few alterations that have been made with the game compared to the movies though — for one, there will be no Nazis. This won’t affect the game mechanics at all, but it will be interesting to see how they deal with what is such an integral part of all three movies.

Something else that caught my attention while checking out information on the game is that LEGO Indy will sport over 60 playable characters — now that is impressive! Also for the first time the game will allow the use of many different weapon pick-ups, rather than character-specific weaponry.

All in all, I can’t wait for LEGO Indy”¦ I can’t wait for the inevitable “Indy week” on TV, and I can’t wait to see how the younger generation is going to react to one of my favourite screen heroes of all time. With the extra fun that the LEGO series of games inject into their other titles, I’m predicting that LEGO Indy will rock”¦ though maybe not enough to knock GTA IV off the top spot unfortunately.

And if you can’t wait until June to get your grubby mitts on LEGO Indy, you can check out the flash version by clicking here.

There’s also a PC demo has just been released for the game here.

LEGO Indiana Jones: The Original Adventures will be released on June 6, 2008 for Xbox 360, Nintendo Wii, Playstation 2, Playstation 3, and Nintendo DS, as well as PC platforms and will be reviewed soon after here on Geeks of Doom.
