Favreau Says ‘Iron Man 2’ Date Is Unrealistic

MajorJJH   |

FavreauWith Iron Man still going relatively strong for a film a month or so out of its premiere, rumors continue to fly around about Iron Man 2. The latest, from director Jon Favreau, who may or may not be up to direct the sequel, is that the movie won’t make its April 2010 release date.

Speaking on the official Iron Man Movie Group on MySpace, Jon Favreau expressed his concerns for Marvel’s planned release date for the second movie.

It’s been five weeks since the one and only phone call my reps have gotten from Marvel. I know their hands are full with the Hulk and I’m sure they will get into it shortly, as they tell me they intend to. I ran into the Marvel guys at the Hulk premiere and everyone sounded eager to get to work on IM2.

I am concerned, however, about the announced release date of April 2010. Neither Robert nor I were consulted about this and we are both concerned about how realistic the date is in light of the fact that we have no script, story or even writers hired yet. This genre of movie is best when it is done thoughtfully and with plenty of preparation. It might be better to follow the BB/DK, X/X2 three year release pattern than to scramble for a date. It is difficult because there are no Marvel 09 releases and they need product, but I also think we owe it to the fans to have a great version of IM2 and, at this point, we would have less time to make it than the first one.

The Incredible Hulk is going to put pressure on Marvel to turn around another movie quickly, but I think Favreau’s concern with an April 2010 release date for Iron Man 2 is entirely realistic, considering that there’s no story or script yet and preparations have not begun for the sequel. Add to that the fact that Favreau hasn’t been signed on to direct the second one (hopefully, he will), but no one else has either.

Less dire, however, is a report at Military.com where Terrence Howard, aka, Jim Rhodes in Iron Man, explains his time with the Air Force in his research for the role. “I found the officers to be much more compassionate then I expected,” Howard said. “They had a sense of responsibility toward life and honor, toward every single military members under their command, that I did not expect.”

As for how Howard did in his role, Captain Mary Danner, Howard’s escort during his research, had the following to say: “I think he made the Air Force proud and did a fantastic and honorable portrayal as Colonel Rhodes. The feedback on the movie and his character has been overwhelmingly positive.”

  1. All the critics said Favreau was an untested director and he would ultimately hurt the movies success – perhaps they should start listening to him now.

  2. It would be a huge mistake to rush it and not have Favreau come back and direct 2.
