I was looking forward to this weekend solely so that I could see another geek movie top off the box office charts. I disliked seeing top spots going to movies like Sex and the City and You Don’t Mess with the Zohan, both of which make me sick to my stomach.
So it was a nice site, albeit an entirely unsurprising one, that greeted me when I checked Box Office Mojo’s end of weekend estimates and saw The Incredible Hulk take the top spot.
The Incredible Hulk came in $20 million over its nearest rival, last week’s number one, Kung Fu Panda, earning an estimated $54.5 million. Panda came in second this week with $34.3 million beating out M. Night Shyamalan’s The Happening, which took in an estimated $30.5 million its opening weekend.
Although The Incredible Hulk comes in just under $10 shy of Ang Lee’s Hulk, the better than average reviews for The Incredible Hulk will hopefully bring the audience back to the theater over the next few weeks.
This was the second of Marvel Studios self-financed films, using Universal as the distributor. Any chance of a sequel will need a good showing at the box office, and even then there are problems ahead. The carnage laying behind Marvel in the way they’ve dealt with Edward Norton is but one problem facing any possible return to the big screen for the Hulk. That being said, the Hulk is already set to appear onscreen in the Avengers film, but the likelihood that Norton will be involved is slim to none.
This week also saw Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull wrap up fifth place, down from last week’s third place, but still beating out SATC.
Next week we’ll get a second geek-ish movie, one that, in my opinion, is likely to topple Incredible Hulk from its number one position. Get Smart, starring Steve Carell and Anne Hathaway, will likely appeal to a larger audience than Incredible Hulk, due mainly to its place in popular history.
As always, big thanks to Box Office Mojo for stats.
