A man who will no doubt go down as a legend in the Geek Hall of Fame, Joss Whedon continues to provide great entertainment for us all. At the San Diego Comic Con this past weekend, Whedon was on hand to answer questions about his upcoming project Dollhouse, which stars Eliza Dushku as Echo and Tahmoh Penikett as an FBI agent, both of whom were alongside Joss on the panel.
Any panel with Whedon in attendance will typically always have a lot of Buffy and Angel fans asking questions, no matter what Joss is currently working on. But Whedon was able to spend a fair chunk of the time shedding a little insight into the Dollhouse.
“Penikett is someone I’ve had a man crush on,” Whedon said, regarding the actor most famous for his role as Helo on Battlestar Galactica. “Oh wait, the term now is bro-mance.” He then continued to describe why Penikett’s character was a favorite of his. “He keeps getting closer and closer to Echo, and when he does, she’s someone else.”
A big piece of news was revealed when asked how his involvement with Dollhouse would affect his tenure on board BSG, Penikett announced that he had been released from his BSG contract so that he could go work on Dollhouse. The announcement brought with it a chorus of “˜Awww’s’ from the packed room.
In any room such as Whedon’s panel, there was always going to be someone out to make an annoyance of themselves. One member of the audience got up and called the trailer that had just been shown “mundane,” to which both Eliza and Joss were quick to respond. Joss noted that the series wouldn’t be all vampires and spaceships, but that “I hope most people know that everything I do is just people. Believe me when I say it’s going to be really exciting.”
More Whedon news came away from the panel, as MTV sat down with Whedon and Neil Patrick Harris, star of Whedon’s now popular Dr. Horrible’s Sing Along Blog. Apparently, by the end of this year we will see a few more additions to the universe, with a downloadable soundtrack in a few weeks, and a DVD to be released later this year.
The DVD is set to have a whole bunch of extra features, including a singing commentary (called “Commentary: The Musical”) and behind the scenes footage taken by a roving cameraman from read-throughs onwards.
Either way, this is a good time for Joss Whedon fans.
