‘Ghostbusters’ Cast To Mentor Next-Gen in ‘G3’

We’ve all been jumping for joy since it was announced last week that Sony/Columbia was moving forward with a third Ghostbusters film that would reunite the original cast of Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd, Harold Ramis, and Ernie Hudson.

But there’s also been talk that Ghostbusters 3 would really center on the next generation of ghostbusters, possibly even played by some of the young actors who regularly appear in the Judd Apatow films.

So, if the new film — to be penned by Office scribes Lee Eisenberg and Gene Stupnitsky — will star a new, younger cast, what role will the original four ghostbusters play?

Ghostbusters star Harold Ramis — whose upcoming comedy Year One was scripted by Eisenberg and Stupnitsky, and produced by Apatow — revealed in an email to the Chicago Tribune’s Pop Machine that the idea is to have the original ghostbusters be mentors to their successors.

yes, columbia is developing a script for GB3 with my year one writing partners, gene stupnitsky and lee eisenberg. judd apatow is co-producing year one and has made several other films for sony, so of course the studio is hoping to tap into some of the same acting talent. aykroyd, ivan reitman and i are consulting at this point, and according to dan, bill murray is willing to be involved on some level. he did record his dialogue for the new ghostbusters video game, as did danny and i, and ernie hudson. the concept is that the old ghostbusters would appear in the film in some mentor capacity.

Note, that Ramis also mentioned that the studio is hoping to get some Apatow’s cast of young regulars involved in G3 (Superbad‘s Michael Cera and Christopher Mintz-Plasse both star in the Ramis’s Judd Apatow-produced Year One). This sentiment concurs with earlier statements from Aykroyd that, “If I could interest Seth [Rogen] and Judd [Apatow] to be part of it, that would be an absolute dream.”

While I’d normally be rolling my eyes at a next-gen scenario, I think bringing the original four stars together will any of Apatow’s gang is not only a dream, but pure genius. A G3 like that is definitely something I’d want to see. I can’t imagine it would be too hard to wrangle Seth Rogen aboard a project this suited for him and his regular co-stars. Now all we need is Rick Moranis back to play Louis Tully and we have the making of a perfect sequel.

  1. Wasn’t the next-gen idea used in one of the ghostbuster cartoon series?

At the start of the article I was cringing a lot (imaging someone like Hayd Christensen in the new recruit role – AAAHAHHHHHHHG). But actors like Rogan and Apatow could gel pretty well with the old cast.
