Every once in a while an actor decides they want to retire, usually when older, like Sean Connery and the late, great Paul Newman. On other occasions, a very young, talented actor decides that they want to retire, and it doesn’t really make sense; this time, it’s actor Joaquin Phoenix.
From the reports, it looks as if Mr. Phoenix wants to concentrate on his music career after learning guitar for his role in Walk the Line. Why he needs to quit acting to play a guitar has no logic behind it at all, so there has to be more to this. People like Kevin Bacon, Keanu Reeves, Jared Leto, and Phoenix’s Gladiator co-star Russell Crowe have all balanced acting and music careers. Maybe Joaquin just sucks at multi-tasking? Who knows?!
This is just another one of the many wacky mysteries to be birthed in the land of movie stars and pretty little hand bags.
I’m willing to bet all of the nothing that I have that we’ll see Joaquin Phoenix in a movie before too long and this is just a “phase,” but at the moment, this is what he said at a screening for Che:
I think it’s just moving on. It’s rediscovering something else. It’s like greener pastures, you know what I mean? And so, I’m just going to try and like, I’ll just be doing the other thing. …Hopefully, I will emotionally impact you with that, as well.
To me, it sounds like Joaquin is talking a little crazy.

he’s poising himself for a Michael Jordan multi-million dollar comeback in Hollywood some years down the road..

Mr. Phoenix has hinted for years at the fact that the whole traditional celebrity thing has worn him out. He says he will try to concentrate on music, but he may find his niche in politics given the fact that he has also been a prominent activist. Either way, he knows what is best for him and I have a pretty good feeling that we’ll be hearing more of him than Johnny Cash songs. Still, it would be awesome to have a version of him singing Bridge Over Troubled Water. Anyhow, you go Joaquin! Namaste’

It has been exciting to see his work as an actor. It is a loss for the movie industry. Don’t know about the music thing though, although he definitely can hold a tune. Whatever he decides to do in the end, I wish the very best for him.
