Earlier today, I wrote about the latest issue of Wired magazine, which is loaded with all kinds of Star Trek goodness and how I had to search all over town for it (and by the way, I realized that a 1-year, 12-issue subscription is a mere $10, so I think I might just go for it).
At the time of my posting, Wired didn’t have any content from the printed issue up on their site yet, though now, I see that they have the feature on master creature creator Neville Page, “Star Trek’s Beast Master Reveals How to Create a Monster,” which I briefly mentioned in my post. The story includes artwork and photos of Page’s previous projects and gives us a look at his concept art for the ice creature from the new Star Trek film, which Page nicknamed “Big Red.”
In Slide #6, Page talks about coming up with the design for Big Red, and seriously, it wasn’t a pleasant task.
“The brief was, it needs the most disgusting mouth,” Page says. He considered crabby, finger-like oral appendages, then decided there’s nothing ickier than the sight of a prolapsed rectum.
Eww…
In the upcoming film, the young James Kirk (Chris Pine) is attacked by the big red creature while marooned on an ice planet. You can catch a glimpse at the creature in Trailer #3 at about 1:45.
Be sure to check out the entire feature at Wired for more details on Page’s ideas for the creature.
