I finally saw Disney/Pixar’s Up this weekend, and while I went into it figuring I’d probably like it but not love it, I ended up absolutely loving it.
I was finishing up my review for the Up 4-Disc Combo Pack, which will be released this Tuesday, November 10, when I noticed that there’s a pre-order deal for it.
If you pre-order the Combo Pack, which includes the Blu-ray version as well as the standard DVD and a Digital Copy, you can get $10 off a second Blu-ray title from a select list: UP Combo Pack Deal. The select list includes great Blu-ray sets for movies like Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, Bolt, Sleeping Beauty, the Pirate of the Caribbean trilogy set, and much more.
Choose from the list and enter promo code DISNEYBD checkout to receive your credit. Remember, the Up 4-Disc Combo Pack comes out this Tuesday, which means you have to pre-order it with the purchase of your second Blu-ray title before then.
If you’re not sure whether to get the 4-disc Blu-ray version or the 2-disc standard DVD version, right now they are both $19.99. The Blu-ray version comes with an extra disc of bonus features not included in the single- and 2-disc versions, plus it comes with a standard DVD copy that you can watch an any DVD player. Getting the Blu-ray version is obviously the better deal, and it seems like this is standard practice for Disney Blu-ray releases.
Also, I’ve heard some people express concern that the Blu-ray version doesn’t have director commentary, which is listed on the 2-disc edition. The Blu-ray edition does have director commentary — and from what I can tell it might be the same (I don’t have the 2-disc DVD). The Blu-ray lists it as “Cine-Explore Commentary,” which is an enhanced Picture-in-Picture video commentary. (If anyone has compared the two versions and it turns out they are NOT the same, let me know.)*
I’ll have my full review for Up posted real soon, but for now, just take my word for it, it’s a great movie, definitely worth owning, especially in high-definition.
*UPDATE: I checked the standard DVD disc that comes with the Blu-ray combo pack and it has the feature film; audio director commentary, which is the same audio that’s used in the Blu-ray’s picture-in-picture video commentary; and all the bonus features that are on the first Blu-ray disc. So, it’s actually what you would have gotten if you got the 2-disc standard DVD version. Note, Disc 2 of the 2-disc DVD is a digital copy of the film which an be downloaded for use on a portal device, like an iPod.
Hey Eve! Thanks for this post. Back when I saw this deal earlier in the weekend, I couldn’t find any real preview/review of the 4-disc special, and as you saw in my tweets, was on the fence on the whole matter. But after thinking how much I love Carl, Russell, and Dug – it’s a no brainer. Gonna jump on it soon, but what to pair it with. (Probably Monsters, Inc.!)
