Last month we learned that Eclipse, the third book in author Stephenie Meyer’s popular vampire series Twilight, had heightened awareness of the classic Emily Brontë novel Wuthering Heights. [Read “˜Twilight’ Gives Boost To “˜Wuthering Heights’.]
In Eclipse it is revealed that Brontë’s 1847 novel is a favorite of Bella’s, the main character in the Twilight series.
Now, Hulu is streaming the 1939 film adaptation of Wuthering Heights online for free to residents of the United States. (You can watch the entire film here below.)
The black and white film, directed by William Wyler and produced by Samuel Goldwyn, starred Laurence Olivier as Heathcliff and Merle Oberon as Catherine. Both the film and the book are worth checking out, but this film takes some liberties, not surprisingly. In the novel, it really comes across that Heathcliff and Catherine are selfish, horrible people, while the movie plays on the star-crossed lovers theme.
