Warner Bros. officially announced production of a 10-episode Mortal Kombat web series based on the Mortal Kombat: Rebirth fan-made movie trailer released months ago. (Embedded below for anyone who missed it.)
The series will be directed by Rebirth creator Kevin Tancharoen and have Michael Jai White returning to play General Jax Briggs. No other casting news has been announced at this time and production will start some time in February.
So, has Hollywood finally come to its senses and realized the potential in producing original content for the web? Unfortunately, the answer is no for now.
The new web series will coincide with the release of the new Mortal Kombat video game due out April 19 — meaning the webisodes probably fit into the marketing/advertising budget to help promote the new game.
But regardless of how it got funded, the important detail is that it’s getting made.
Check back for more news on casting details as it rolls in…
I don’t think web exclusive content will be profitable for a long time to come. It is difficult to find out about, and the advertisers therefor won’t be lining up. I am disappointed that this was not made into the movie they wanted/a serialized TV series.
I’m sure I don’t fit in to any demographic concerning Mortal Kombat but I am a fan. Saw every movie and the TV series and am 60 yrs.old . I’ll take whatever form of M.K. there is.
