Fox is showing interest in producing a drama adapted from DC Comics character The Spectre, yet another DC property after their recent run with Human Target.
The Spectre was created by Jerry Siegel and Bernard Baily and made his first full appearance in 1940’s More Fun Comics #52. The character is what could be best described as the spirit of vengeance. He is a lost soul who reaps on the wicked. Most recently The Spectre’s human form on Earth as Jim Corrigan was portrayed as a police officer who worked within the pages of one of the best comics of the past ten years, Gotham Central.
He was about as corrupt as you could imagine, and was responsible for many of the dark plots within the series. His life as a sinner ultimately made his soul trapped in purgatory to pay for his crimes on Earth. And in that role, he was appointed to the position of The Spectre, the embodiment of God’s wrath. As The Spectre, Corrigan comes to Earth and punishes those who lived lives similar to his by removing their evil souls from the land of the living. There are a lot of horror and spiritual themes related to this character, and it has a lot of potential.
How is this going to work for television? I have no clue. But The Spectre is awesome, and I’m dying to see this show come to light.
The names associated with the project thus far are Brandon Camp (who I hope is somehow related to me), who makes his return to television to write the adaptation and producer Bill Gerber (Gran Torino). There aren’t a lot of details as the project is still in its infancy, but hopefully this will get off the ground, because this could be a really cool show.
With information of these DC Comics-related TV shows like this and Deadman hitting the news, I have to wonder, what’s next?

I wonder if this is another DC ploy to milk Siegel’s work before his family wins the rights to his characters a la “Man Of Steel”

Vampires, Deadman, The Spectre – sounds like death is just a step to a new TV career.

The Jim Corrigan who served as the Spectre and the Jim Corrigan from Gotham Central are NOT the same character. And the original Corrigan was not a corrupt cop, though he was a pretty brutal one.
