Birds of Prey is an all-female group of heroes, vigilantes, and rogues from the DC universe. Now they will get to have their own titular movie starring Margot Robbie, who is reprising her Harley Quinn character.
While the film has yet to enter production, we are now learning who the other DC super-powered female characters appearing alongside Quinn will be. According to new report, she will be joined by Black Canary, Huntress, Cassandra Cain, and Renee Montoya. More on the story below.
The Wrap’s Umberto Gonzalez was the first to report on the news. According to his sources, the high-pitched screaming Black Canary, the dangerous Huntress, the martial artist Cassandra Cain, and the inquisitive Renee Montoya, better known as the Question are all joining Quinn.
Here are descriptions of who the characters are:
- Black Canary, aka Dinah Laurel, is a fantastic hand-to-hand combatant who comes from a family of crime fighters. Her father, Larry Lance, was a police officer, while her mother (also named Dinah) was the original Black Canary.
- Helena Bertinelli, aka Huntress, is a vigilante operating out of Gotham City.
- Cassandra Cain is one of the world’s greatest martial artists, and also a vigilante.
- Renee Montoya is a detective working for the Gotham City Police Department. Montoya is openly lesbian, and during The New 52 comics she takes on a costumed identity, becoming the Question.
It’s funny how Warner Bros. is, once again, first to cross the female superhero movie finish line. The studio was the first to release a major female superhero film – directed by a female – in Wonder Woman, and now they will most likely be the first to release an all-female superhero ensemble film – also directed by a female.
There is also word that it will feature a Batman villain that’s never been seen before in a feature film. So let the speculation begin. Let’s just hope it’s not the Condiment King – or does his cameo appearance in The LEGO Batman Movie count? Joking aside, how awesome would it be to see Mad Hatter in this?
Birds of Prey will be directed by Cathy Yan from a script written by Christina Hodson, who is also writing Batgirl.
Production is set to begin sometime in January 2019. Hopefully, more will be revealed about the film during San Diego Comic-Con this weekend.
Birds of Prey has no official release date yet.
