Numan Acar Joins Spider-Man: Far From Home

It’s that time again. The time when a new actor joins a film as a mysterious character whose name leads to much speculation. This time it’s Numan Acar joining the cast of Spider-Man: Far From Home, where he will play a character named Dmitri.

And while reports do not add any more details, the name might ring a bell for those who are familiar with Spider-Man’s history. More on the story below.

In the comics, Dmitri is better known as Dmitri Smerdyakov, aka Chameleon, a supervillain who can change his appearance to almost anyone. While this may be just another villain addition, it may also put us one step closer to seeing the Sinister Six on the big screen.

Deadline was the first to report on the news. Acar joins J.B. Smoove, who will play an unknown role, and potentially Jake Gyllenhaal, who is in talks to play the big baddie Mysterio. If things do fall into place, and Acar does end up playing as Chameleon, it may lead up to a Sinister Six bout against Spidey.

Of course, Sony attempted to have the Sinister Six in the Amazing Spider-Man franchise as well as their own spinoff, but due to the franchise’s poor performance, that never panned out. But with Marvel Studios’ help, it looks like the Sinister Six may actually appear on the big screen.

Now we can’t say that the character will be like his comic-book counter part – but it still would be nice if it were. The thing is, the MCU has gone out of their way to differentiate itself from their comic book source material. So things aren’t translated as seen from the page to the big screen. So if there are any changes, it would not be a big surprise. Look at what Spider-Man did for Vulture (Michael Keaton), Shocker (Bokeem Woodbine), and Mac Gargan (Michael Mando). While Gargan never actually got his Scorpion suit, his involvement does lead to speculation that he could appear in a future Spider-Man film.

For those who may not be familiar with them, the Sinister Six is a group of six of Spider-Man’s rogues, who team up in order to get revenge on the Webslinger. Though the line-up has changed from time to time, the goal was always the same.

As for Dmitri, well his familial connections could lead up to another baddie. But that sort of speculation should be left for another time. In the comics, Dmitri Smerdyakov is like the red-headed stepchild of the Russian Kravinoff family. His poor treatment left some deep psychological scars, and led him to a life of espionage where he became a master of disguise.

It will be interesting to see what kinds of villains Spider-Man might run into overseas. Remember, Far From Home will reportedly take place in England. As to how Spider-Man will get himself into trouble, we will have to wait and see.

Spider-Man: Far From Home stars Tom Holland, Zendaya, Jacob Batalon, and more. It opens in theaters on July 5, 2019.
