Geoff Johns To Write Green Lantern Corps

The long-gestating Green Lantern Corps hasn’t been in the news much since it was announced at Comic-Con a few years back. Since then, we’ve seen very little of the character in the DCEU. In fact, one lantern made an appearance in the opening sequence of Justice League. But Green Lantern Corps is just one of the many titles to be announced in recent years. Unfortunately, Justice League‘s poor box office performance, forced Warner Bros. to rethink their plans for the DCEU. This included revamping the creative forces behind it. And now it looks like there will be even more changes. But they will be positive ones.

Reports are saying Geoff Johns, who was the head of DC Entertainment, will be stepping down from his position. He will, however, be staying at WB and stick close to DC. That’s because Johns will be launching his own production company, Mad Ghost Productions, within the studio all the while writing the script for the Green Lantern Corps movie. More on the story below.

Johns’ exit follows last year’s hiring of Walter Hamada. Hamada, who was responsible for films like The Conjuring, is the president of DC film operations. At the time Johns remained on board as president and chief creative officer. His responsibilities also included overseeing other DC entertainment outlets like TV shows and comics.

According to THR, Johns’ exit will have him enter into an exclusive writer-producer deal with Warner Bros. and DC. His new production company, Mad Ghost Productions, will allow Johns to bring all sorts of new film and television content for WB. Not only that, but “he will have his hand in current DC properties and reimagined ones as well.”

That includes writing the script and producing the new Green Lantern movie. Johns is already tapped to write and produce Wonder Woman 2, and he “will have a co-writing and executive producing credit on Aquaman,” which opens later this December.

The move seems perfect for Johns, who has spent nine years of his life writing Green Lantern comics, including spinoffs and other major comic book events. Having that much knowledge about the universe could be just the thing that the DCEU needs. Hopefully, with his script, Green Lantern Corps could steer the DCEU in the right direction after the film universe’s multiple missteps. Based on the report, it sounds like Johns will be starting fresh. Of course, there is a chance that he could use David Goyer’s script as a draft.

Looking at Mad Ghost Production’s official website, you may notice that their slate includes many DC titles. While there may not be much to look at, each title does come with a brief plot description. And for Green Lantern Corps, it finally confirms a long-standing rumor that has been floating around for months. Hal Jordan and John Stewart will both be in the film, confirming that this will be a comic book intergalactic buddy cop film. The title itself indicates that we could be seeing more than just two humans wielding those rings. There’s the possibility of seeing Kilowog and Tomar-Re. But that is just pure speculation on my part.

Green Lantern Corps is tentatively scheduled for a July 24, 2020, release.
