Sure, the first film may have been shockingly entertaining in its gruesome and somewhat inventive use of piranha-based violence, but expectations for the sequel, Piranha 3DD, aren’t all that high. However, that doesn’t mean you’ll be seeing it skip out on theaters.
Early this week, rumors arose via Digital Spy that the film’s distributors, Entertainment Film Distributors, planned to release the film directly to DVD and Blu-ray on March 19. However, director John Gulager has spoken to STYD and revealed that the film is still set to hit theaters come this spring.
Now, personally, I’m actually quite excited for this film. I found the first flick to be insanely entertaining, and truly solid in its depiction of violence. Culminating in one of the goriest set pieces you’ll see, Piranha was something of a shocker when it hit in 2010. Far from a masterpiece, the film was just a fine bit of B-movie horror. Here’s to hoping we’ll get more of that come this spring.

I completely agree! Piranha 3D wasn’t going to win any prestigious awards but I thought it unique in being a B-movie with great production value.
