There are few movies I love in the world more than John Carpenter‘s 1982 remake of The Thing. Actually there are two — Evil Dead 2 and Blade Runner — but that’s not the point. I love The Thing more than the original Alien most days. It’s just a perfect amalgam of vintage and modern horror-tinged sci-fi with an oppressively effective setting, terrific ensemble acting, innovative practical creature effects that remain horrifying to this day, and an infinitely more quotable script than Alien (Aliens, not so much).
On the other hand, I have never heard of Pingu, a British-Swiss stop-motion animated children’s series about a family of penguins, until today. But stop-motion animation will always hold a special place in my heart, especially when it’s being used to depict a battle between an extraterrestrial monster that can imitate any being and a group of penguins possessing warm hearts and a fully-fueled flamethrower.
With that in mind I give you John Carpenter’s The Thing performed by the cast of Pingu and animated by Lee Hardcastle. In a little over two minutes we get all the classic moments from the movie with lots of claymation fire and copious penguin honking.
I think my brain is melting. Â There’s no other way to describe this mental throbbing. Â It’s like a train wreck–horrific, but I can’t force myself to look away…
