In what could be the greatest news of all time, World Wrestling Entertainment‘s film department WWE Films and Lionsgate are pairing to bring a new take on the cult classic horror film Leprechaun.
Now, there currently aren’t a lot of details about the rebirth of this movie as of yet, but there are a few things to note that I’ve gathered from various WWE news sources and as a watcher of their films. First, don’t get me wrong, when I say that I watch WWE movies, I want you to take into consideration that I love watching horrible movies, and with the exception of Asylum, WWE pretty much has the terrible movie genre on lockdown. However, it seems that WWE has realized this fact and has attempted to change a few things recently when they’ve made statement regarding where the film department is going in the future.
Future projects from WWE Films are set to be finished products that are purchased and will feature WWE’s involvement as a distribution center, partnering with other studios and continuing their current tradition of casting WWE superstars in starring roles like Legendary and The Marine (I’m still waiting for Colt Cabana’s The Marine 3: Citizens on Patrol). And while these statements have previously been made over the past year, this is the first time that WWE has made a public move with another studio thus far.
Knowing that Leprechaun is one of the keystone crazy as Hell horror movies from the early ’90s, and considering the partnership with Lionsgate here, I don’t see WWE acting as anything but an investor in or distributor of the project. So if you’re a fan of the decent to hilariously awful Leprechaun franchise, I don’t think you’ll be upset by the WWE association. Now, this is just one writer’s take on the situation, but I honestly think it’s a safe bet to assume that the WWE involvement will be minimal. Although I could be wrong and we’ll end up seeing WWE superstar Hornswoggle as the title character.
Again, the facts are scarce at this point, so make sure to stay tuned to Geeks of Doom for coverage because it gives me a reason to talk about wrestling on this site.
