In the wake of the mega-successful Kicstarter campaign that launched one of the most talked about creator owned projects in comics, Womanthology has been announced as an ongoing series from IDW Publishing.
Renae De Liz, the mastermind behind Womanthology and the Heroic graphic novel anthology that it spawned, is pushing forward with a brand new series entitled Womanthology: Space. The comic will still be a contribution piece exclusively created by women. and will feature three stories in each issue that center around the ongoing concept of Space. Creators announced so far for the series are Blair Butler, Fiona Staples, Jessica Hickman, Bonnie Burton, Ming Doyle, and Stacie Ponder, with many more providing contributions that we simply don’t know of yet.
This is truly a unique way to approach a comic book series, and should provide, at the very least, an inspiration to anyone out there that they should never accept “no,” as an answer to their dreams. De Liz and company wanted to put out a collection created by women, and then they did it. They got it funded by simply asking people to donate and quickly became one of the highest grossing campaigns on Kickstarter. They transitioned this into getting a print run from IDW and then transitioned that into an ongoing series. AN ONGOING SERIES ABOUT SPACE! How cool is that? Seriously, these women are amazing.
But aside from the success story, it’s a really cool idea for a comic series. Think about it, three separate stories in each issue featuring a space theme with a wide range of creators from experienced to rookies looking to prove themselves in the industry. The veterans we know can provide some awesome stories and the newcomers will be clawing their ways to outshine the veterans. This is sure to be a great comic and I can’t wait for it to hit stores this fall.
Womanthology: Space will hit stores and online retailers in September 2012.
