At first, video game adaptations sound promising but sometimes they fail to deliver. So far Resident Evil is one of the few successful film franchises based on a video game series. Now Michael Fassbender would like to get into the video game adaptation business by turning Assassin’s Creed into a film.
For those who don’t know about Assassin’s Creed, the game is primarily set in the past where history was most prevalent. The first two were set during the Crusades and Renaissance periods with a third – scheduled for release soon – set during the American Revolution. All revolve around a man named Desmond Miles who lives in the distant future where technology allows him to relive the moments of these assassins.
Variety doesn’t specify if Fassbender will play both Desmond and the Assassin, but since he is starring in the film, it’s probably safe to assume that he will. Though much of the game centers on killing people, there are some solid narratives that exist in the Assassin’s Creed franchise. Obviously Fassbender sees the potential in this, otherwise he would not have signed on.
The trade mentions that there was a deal to produce the film with Sony, but UbiSoft didn’t like that idea and decided to “develop the film independently in order to maintain greater creative control.” With Fassbender producing, it’s likely that he will bring people he likes to work with in to develop a more in depth story.
Bringing Fassbender on board to produce and star the Assassin’s Creed is a great way to start things off.
Noooo no no no no! They simply cannot mar the glory that is AC with yet another awful video game to movie cross over! Seriously Fassbender is not the type to play Desmond, Altair, or Ezio for that matter. Hollywood has ruined too much of what I love already esp. with that god awful John Carter puke….Â
