At first, video game adaptations sound promising but sometimes they fail to deliver. So far Resident Evil is one of the few successful film franchises based on a video game series. Now Michael Fassbender would like to get into the video game adaptation business by turning Assassin’s Creed into a film.

For those who don’t know about Assassin’s Creed, the game is primarily set in the past where history was most prevalent. The first two were set during the Crusades and Renaissance periods with a third – scheduled for release soon – set during the American Revolution. All revolve around a man named Desmond Miles who lives in the distant future where technology allows him to relive the moments of these assassins.

The Assassin’s Creed franchise had become pretty stale lately with a new game every single year and the previous three in a row set in Italy with protagonist Ezio Auditore. However, even though a year off would have probably been for the best, the decision to jump to a completely different point in time is looking to be a very smart one by Ubisoft.

Assassin’s Creed III moves to the American Revolution, and a couple new gameplay demos shown off at E3 have a decent little buzz growing around the game. The first demo shows the assassin you’ll be playing as, but instead of navigating an ancient city, he’s making his way through snowy forests and enemy forts (though there will still be cities as well, such as Boston). The second (and possibly even more exciting) demo reveals a new layer to Assassin’s Creed gameplay: naval warfare. Players will take the wheel of a massive vessel and head out sea where some serious Master and Commander cannon fire will be exchanged.

The Assassin’s Creed franchise has seen its ups and down. While being incredibly enjoyable and unique at first, sequels were being released at a rampant pace and gamers quickly got sick of them. The series needed a serious breath of fresh air and needed it badly, a breath of fresh air developer and publisher Ubisoft hopes they have with Assassin’s Creed III.

The fifth game in the franchise (on consoles and PC) is on its way to us this fall, and it certainly takes us to places we’ve not yet been in the franchise: the American Revolution.
