Dark Phoenix, the latest installment in the X-Men film franchise, was supposed to be released in November. But the film needed some additional photography and reshoots, and as a result, it pushed the release date to February of next year. Whether or not this was a sign of trouble is unknown. But at least we get to finally see what has become of Simon Kinberg‘s directorial debut.
Fox has dropped the first trailer for Dark Phoenix, which is based on the story arc of the same name which sees Jean Grey, one of the most powerful members of the X-Men, fuse with a cosmic entity who has the power to destroy the entire galaxy. Check out the trailer and a new poster below.
Dark Phoenix reunites James McAvoy, Michael Fassbender, Jennifer Lawrence, Nicholas Hoult, Tye Sheridan, Alexandra Shipp, Kodi Smit-McPhee, Evan Peters, and Sophie Turner for another adaptation of “The Dark Phoenix Saga.” X-Men: The Last Stand made an attempt to adapt the story arc into a film. And while it is a bad film, it is certainly not the worst. No, that goes to X-Men: Days of Future Past and X-Men: Apocalypse. The former just screwing up the film franchise’s timeline, while the latter is something we probably hope we can forget but can’t.
Now Kinberg’s film will be the franchise’s second try at adapting the arc properly. As with all sequels, there are new additions. Jessica Chastain is the newest actor to join the franchise. In the film, she will play a mysterious character who will influence Jean into embracing her new-found powers and use it on the humans who have unjustly persecuted mutant kind.
Normally, a delay like this would indicate that a film is bad. However, reshoots are just a part of the process for any film of this size. So let’s just hope it works out for the Dark Phoenix.
Here’s the official plot synopsis:
In Dark Phoenix, the X-Men face their most formidable and powerful foe: one of their own, Jean Grey. During a rescue mission in space, Jean is nearly killed when she is hit by a mysterious cosmic force. Once she returns home, this force not only makes her infinitely more powerful, but far more unstable. Wrestling with this entity inside her, Jean unleashes her powers in ways she can neither comprehend nor contain. With Jean spiraling out of control, and hurting the ones she loves most, she begins to unravel the very fabric that holds the X-Men together. Now, with this family falling apart, they must find a way to unite – not only to save Jean’s soul, but to save our very planet from aliens who wish to weaponize this force and rule the galaxy.
Dark Phoenix opens in theaters on February 14, 2019.
