What makes a person want to create a super-secret spy agency that has all the coolest gadgets and fashionable attire to go with it? Well, Matthew Vaughn‘s The King’s Man, the prequel to The Kingsman film franchise, will answer that.
With the world on the brink of a global war, Harris Dickinson (Ralph Finnes) creates a new independent spy agency that would operate outside of government. Check out the new trailer here below, along with the new poster and images from the film.
The Kingsman film franchise prides itself on being an homage to the classic spy films, where agents were cool and sauve, and had some of the most incredible gadgets and highly expensive cars. With the franchise also being based on a comic book, it allowed for a more stylized action to be injected into action sequences.
And it looks like that will continue, but with a bit more grit to it. Additionally, it looks like it won’t recycle the plot as it goes for more of a historical slant to it with what appears to be Rasputin, who may be the villain of the film, and what looks like the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria, which is one of the catalysts for World War I.
Here’s the official plot synopsis:
As a collection of history’s worst tyrants and criminal masterminds gather to plot a war to wipe out millions, one man must race against time to stop them. Discover the origins of the very first independent intelligence agency in The King’s Man.
It will be interesting to see if any subsequent The King’s Man prequels will explore more historical events, like World War I, the Vietnam War, or the Cold War. It would be a fun way to expand on the franchise, though. I guess we will just have to wait and see.
Gemma Arterton, Rhys Ifans, Matthew Goode, Tom Hollander, Daniel Brühl, Djimon Hounsou, and Charles Dance also star.
The King’s Man opens in theaters on February 14, 2020.
