After the success of Despicable Me, a sequel was an easy choice to make (watch the teaser trailer right here), which is currently set for release in July of next year. One of the most popular things about the movies is easily the Minions, those strangely loveable little Twinkie-shaped henchmen.
Now comes word that those same little yellow creatures are, in fact, so popular, that they will now be getting their very own spinoff movie.
Chris Meledandri‘s Illumination Entertainment is making the movie for Universal, with hopes of releasing at some point in 2014.
No word on what storyline will be followed exactly, only that it will be original and follow the Minions as they interact with humans and new characters.
The spinoff doesn’t have an official title yet, but it does have a screenplay already completed by Brian Lynch, and a director in Pierre Coffin with Kyle Balda co-directing. Coffin co-directed the first Despicable Me and directed its upcoming sequel.
