Originally Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters was supposed to hit theaters last March, but in some last minute decision making, Paramount and MGM decided that the film deserved to be released January 2013. Now we are getting our first look at the film, which features an older Hansel and Gretel (played by Jeremy Renner and Gemma Arterton respectively) protecting various villages by killing off threatening witches.
Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters is just another movie that takes a childhood fairy tale and puts a slight twist on it. We’ve already seen a couple of these films produce mediocre results, so why should Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters be any different. Well the film is set a couple of years after the events of when the children were nearly eaten by a witch and the sibling witch hunters have an assortment of weapons which includes Gatling guns.
I am not joking around, in an age where even the most primitive gun wasn’t even invented yet, these two managed to create sophisticated weapons and battle witches with high-powered weaponry. Yeah, it’s all very strange, but since it’s a movie, and its based on a fairy tale, I think people will let that pass.
Though the dialogue may be a little bit cheesy, this film was produced when Hollywood was hopped up on the spinning fairy tale classics craze. But I am worried about the visuals, as they look glaringly incomplete. Hopefully someone can get to work on polishing the visuals because the errors will show, especially since this film will also be released in 3D.
Directed by Tommy Wirkola, Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters opens also stars Famke Janssen and opens in theaters on January 11, 2013.
