*Updated Below*

The great thing about owning Star Wars (if you happen to have a few billion dollars hiding in your gigantic couch cushions, as Disney did), is that you don’t have to wait around to see if one movie will do well enough to warrant a sequel and eventual franchise. It’s already one of the most established franchises in history, a guaranteed cash cow. And they plan on jumping all over that fact like a frat boy would a freshly microwaved burrito…hopefully to our collective delight, and not our condemnation.

We’ve already found out that Oscar winning Little Miss Sunshine and Toy Story 3 writer Michael Arndt will write the first planned movie, Star Wars Episode VII, for its 2015 release. But now comes word that the company is already looking at two more writers to take on the next two installments, Star Wars Episode VIII (or IIX? Have we ever gotten this high with a Roman numeral movie franchise?) and Star Wars Episode IX.

According to Deadline, Disney has approached both Lawrence Kasdan and Simon Kinberg, and it’s thought that the contact is in hopes of securing the writers for Star Wars sequels down the road. It’s unclear, however, whether these two were approached for the next two movies, or if it’s just for Episode VIII.

Kasdan makes all the sense in the world. He’s already penned two of the original three Star Wars flicks, The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi. He’s also a four-time Academy Award nominee, and has written movies like Raiders of the Lost Ark, Silverado, and The Big Chill. On the other hand, 2012’s Darling Companion came almost a decade after his previous work, 2003’s Dreamcatcher. He also directed many of the movies he’s written.

Kinberg has no Oscar nominations yet, but he does have blockbuster and science fiction experience. His credits include the not-so-beloved X-Men: The Last Stand and the upcoming X-Men First Class sequel, Days of Future Past, as well as Sherlock Holmes, Mr. & Mrs. Smith, and Jumper.

Nothing is official yet, of course, but would you be happy to see Lawrence Kasdan and Simon Kinberg working on future installments of Disney’s Star Wars movies? Or do you need to see how the first one goes before even thinking about others?

UPDATE: According to The Hollywood Reporter, Kasdan and Kinberg have both closed their deals to write an installment in the new Star Wars trilogy, though it’s unclear which movie each will be writing. The pair are also said to be joining as producers as well.
