Official Synopsis:
When an alien attack threatens the Earth’s existence, giant robots piloted by humans are deployed to fight off the menace.
What I Learned:
Neon Genesis Evangelion + Robot Jox + Sym-Bionic Titan + GLaDOS = Shut up and take my money!
Why I Wouldn’t Watch:
Let’s just skip right on by this argument now.
Why I’ll Watch:
Skyscraper tall kaiju (strange beasts), also measured at half the size of Michael Bay’s ego, tower over the Golden Gate Bridge and other famous monuments after having risen from a portal in the deepest ocean depths to raise havoc on the coastal cities of Earth. Other reasons I’d watch are, in no particular order:
1) Director Guillermo del Toro legitimizing Robot Jox. Del Toro has proven himself time after time with the likes of the Hellboy movies, Blade II, Pan’s Labyrinth (the most beautiful and horrifying adult fantasy I’ve viewed in a long time) and even 1997’s cockroaches-are-man-sized-and-want-to-eat-us movie Mimic. I have a strong feeling that Del Toro has provided us with the big ball of fun that most summer movies forgot how to be.
2) Idris Elba (Prometheus, Luther) chewing up the scenery with his Badass Boast about putting the apocalypse on hold. Let’s be honest, Idris Elba in anything is a plus for me.
3) Sharp ears will have noticed Charlie Hunnam‘s (Sons of Anarchy) gravelly voice over. He’s the one informing us about the dimensional portal under the sea.
4) Some of you may have noted that I mentioned Sym-Bionic Titan earlier. That was the most recent western animated version of giant monsters attacking a city. It was created by Genndy Tartakovsky (Samurai Jack) and aired on Cartoon Network back in 2010. Sadly it was not picked up for a second season*. This was tragic because it was an amazing animated work. Maybe Pacific Rim will give Cartoon Network a reason to cash in on the coming “kaiju battle fever” and they’ll give Tartakovsky a chance to close the story with an animated movie.
How about it, Cartoon Network suits?
5) Giant exo-suits fighting giant inter-dimensional alien monsters. How many ways do I have to spell ‘fun’ for you?
When’s it coming?

*It seems Sym-Bionic Titan is rerunning on Adult Swim’s Toonami block at 2AM.
