Innervisions, the landmark album by the mighty Stevie Wonder, is now available in MP3 format from Amazon this month for only $3.99. (The CD is currently $9.99 and comes with an MP3 version of the album as well.)
Released 40 years ago this year, and the 16th studio album by Wonder, who had already conquered the 1960s with his Motown R&B mix of pop and early strains of funk, which reached untold masses, amps up that sound here and throws in socially conscious issues and crisper production on Innervisions and it remains one of Motown’s and R&B’s finest records.
From the hot groove opening of “Too High,” which speaks of drug abuse metaphoric and literal, to the down-on-one’s-luck day to day drudges of “Living in the City,” to one of his biggest chart hits and all-time successes in “Higher Ground,” and the breakthrough creative highlights of “Golden Lady” and “Don’t You Worry “˜Bout A Thing,” Innervisions comes out of the starting gate like a Formula 1 race car blazing down the asphalt and never let’s up. Wonder also plays most of the instruments on the album as well, and not in a novelty sense whatsoever. He plays with a confidence and self-assurance that is absolutely mindblowing, much like the record itself. Come explore the inner vision Stevie Wonder intended here and then some, indeed.
