SDCC 2013:The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones panel

We all know that everyone is looking for the next film series to match the success of the Twilight movies, and that’s what Sony Pictures seems to be going for with The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones. The film is based on Cassandra Clare‘s series of young adult novels, and Clare was on hand at San Diego Comic-Con today to introduce the film to the crowd in Hall H and show off some exlusive footage. Joining here for the panel were director Harold Zwart and actors Lily Collins, Jamie Campbell Bower, Robert Sheehan, Godfrey Gao, and Kevin Zegers.

The panel started off with Lily Collins talking about her character and explaining her motivations of finding her character’s mom. Collins said that she was a fan of the books before she was cast in the movie.

Director Harold Zwart said that the biggest problem with adapting the book was finding what could be cut out to get the story into a length that would fit into the movie. He said that he had plenty of input from Cassandra Clare in getting the script into a workable form. Clare also said that she was pleased to work with the films creators, and helped to explain what happens in future books in the series, so that all the important parts are left in.

If you’ve never heard of The Mortal Instruments before, it is the story of Clary Fray, who turns out to be a Shadowhunter, a part angel being who fights against demons, and then she meets a guy and stuff happens. It’s your standard “boy meets girl and then fights some crazy crap” scenario that a lot of people seem to enjoy.

Then came an extended clip from the film that had Clary’s mom, played by Game Of Thrones star Lena Headey, being attacked by a couple of supernatural thugs while Clary meets Jamie Campbell Bower’s character and learns about the nature of this supernatural world that she finds herself in.

All in all, the cast seemed to have fun and the fans of the book series seemed to enjoy what they saw. You can check out The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones on August 20, 2013.
