D23 Expo 2013: Imagineering photo gallery banner

The Journey Into Imagineering exhibit at this year’s D23 Expo in Anaheim, CA, takes attendees into the various components of Walt Disney Imagineering. Past, present and future are all covered inside this massive venue, flooding with artistry and the artists who have made them a reality. Each area of the exhibit features Imagineers, many of whom have worked on projects, including the recent Disney California Adventure theme park expansion.

Check out our photo gallery here below from the exhibit, which includes perhaps the “geekiest” touches one could appreciate: hints of Marvel, Avatar, and Star Wars making their way to the Walt Disney Parks and Resorts!

Captain America greeted his legions of fans in the Marvel Academy-themed space. The concept art on the walls depict a future kids club area of the Disney Magic ship aboard Disney Cruise Line. “The First Avenger” will be appearing soon, and made his inaugural Disney experience at D23 Expo. Salute to the Captain!

While much remains to be seen of Avatar Land, which is a little office set found in the center of the exhibit that shows concept art and little touches of the Pandora world. Still vague and several years out, Imagineers could not reveal too much, but it does remain clear that Avatar will be coming to Disney World’s Animal Kingdom in Florida. The Imagineers are hard at work in recreating this James Cameron atmosphere, even if they cannot say much specifically at this point.

Star Wars Land – the rumored title of the still-not-announced themed area of Disney’s Hollywood Studios – is only hinted at. And when I say hinted, I mean, there is no evidence of an actual land. But R2-D2 appears in person to have his picture taken with adoring guests, and I could not resist. The boxes in the background reference “Orange Harvest,” which may raise some clues of more Star Wars in the parks. What do you think?

Other highlights from Journey Into Imagineering include smaller exhibits themed to architecture, design, special effects, and other attributes of classic Disney attractions. This is a must-see space with not enough time to explore. My pictures only tell a piece of the complex puzzle that is this exhibit, which is only a fragment of the wonders of Walt Disney Imagineering!
