If and when we see Bong Joon-ho‘s Snowpiercer, it’s very unlikely that it will be the cut that the director approved, but the cut that The Weinstein Company wants you to see. The war of the cuts have been going on for quite some time, with Joon-ho being diplomatic about the the 20 minutes that the distributor wants to cut from the film. But recently the director has been extremely unhappy with how his film is being treated, and is now claiming that his cut is better than the Weinstien’s.
The war of words has really affected the film’s domestic marketing, for which there is none. Of the trailers that have been released, a lot of them have been international trailers. Even with Chris Evans starring in the film, it’s unlikely to gain the box office traction a sci-fi film would normally get. But Joon-ho’s statements could be just the push needed to get this film out there sooner than later. Hit the jump to see what the director had to say about his version when compared to Weinstein’s.
It’s still going on. Some aspects are a little bit exaggerated. Some people misunderstood that there already exists a North American version with 20 minutes cut out. But that kind of version doesn’t exist. Officially the negotiation is still going on, and I’m trying my best to keep my own version and also the CJ people (the Korean investors/distributors) are trying to confirm the release date, the marketing plan and many other things they are still negotiating and the funny thing is once there did exist a 20-minute cut-out version, a Weinstein version of Snowpiercer, they had a screening of that version in New Jersey in July. Then CJ did another test screening of my original version in LA with a normal American audience, and with my version the response was much higher than the scores from the Weinstein version.
We can’t be certain that The Weinstein’s cut will be the final one to make it into theaters. Joon-ho’s words are carefully chosen though, because he sounds like he is still willing to make a few compromises just as along as the Weinstein’s doesn’t completely butcher his vision. If we are to believe that Joon-ho’s cut is better than the Weinstein’s, then the distributor might want to rethink which scenes should be cut, if any at all.
As unlikely as that it is to happen, we’ll just have to hold on hope that the Weinsteins will approve of Joon-ho’s cut above their own.
