In 2012, Gerard Butler played a surfer in the movie Chasing Mavericks. As it turns out, this may have been something of an audition. According to sources, Butler is in final negotiations for one of the lead roles in Point Break, a remake of the 1991 action flick of the same name that starred Keanu Reeves and Patrick Swayze.

Butler will play Bodhi, the character Swayze played in the original movie. Unlike Swayze’s character, who was a surfer, the new Bodhi is an extreme sports athlete who seeks to achieve great feats in various athletic endeavors, including surfing.

The movie follows an FBI agent who goes undercover to take down a group of surfers who double as bank robbers. The role of the FBI agent, played by Reeves in the original, has not yet been cast.

The remake will be directed by Fast and the Furious and Daredevil cinematographer Ericson Core.
