The BBC has released the first picture of new Doctor Peter Capaldi wearing his Doctor Who character’s new costume.
Check out the photo here below.
The outfit’s controlling color is a deep blue: a dark blue Crombie coat with red lining, dark blue trousers, and a white shirt, finished with a pair of black Doc Martens. Capaldi himself described the costume, which was designed by Howard Burden, as “Simple, stark, and back to basics. No frills, no scarf, no messing, just 100% Rebel Time Lord.”

The choice of midnight blue evokes images both new and old. The tightly tailored look recalls both Matt Smith’s most recent costume as well as that of his predecessor David Tennant. The deep color also relates to the deep burgundy of Smith’s latest attire, but also echoes back to costumes that are far older.
The midnight blue looks almost black, and black was the primarily color of the Doctor’s costume for the first eight seasons. William Hartnell wore the black coat, arrow collar, and black cravat of an Edwardian gentleman. Patrick Troughton was the Chaplin-esque cosmic hobo with a sort of weaker version of Hartnell’s costume: rumpled black coat, rumpled white shirt, and black bow tie. Jon Pertwee was the glam dandy, with a black velvet jacket, ruffled white shirt, and black opera cloak with bright red lining for his first two seasons (the color palette changed for the rest.) The red lining of the Doctor’s new coat particularly brings that opera cloak to mind.

The look on Peter Capaldi’s face suggests that his will be a darker, grimmer Doctor. As head writer and showrunner Steven Moffat recently put it: “Monsters of the universe, the vacation is over – Capaldi is suited and booted and coming to get you.” All that is a guess, however. Of the truth, only time will tell.
Capaldi made his split-second debut on Doctor Who in the 50th anniversary special, The Day Of The Doctor, in November; his full reveal was during the 2013 Christmas Special, The Time of the Doctor, where former Doctor Matt Smith regenerated into Capaldi’s new Doctor. Filming for the upcoming eighth season of Doctor Who began in Cardiff earlier this month, and will begin airing in Fall 2014 on BBC One.
