Naughty Dog Talks ‘The Last Of Us’ Sequel and PS4 Release, Possible New Title

The Last of Us

If you’ve played developer Naughty Dog’s Game of the Year favorite, The Last of Us, you know how ridiculously good it is. You’re also likely excited for the new story DLC being released for the game, titled “Left Behind,” which will be released on Valentine’s Day (why waste money on flowers and chocolate when you can be playing this?). But would fans be interested in playing The Last of Us 2? That’s exactly what Naughty Dog is currently pondering—the other option being a brand new title.

Whether or not to make a Last of Us sequel is a tricky conundrum to work out. Some would be quite eager to jump into another story involving Joel and Ellie and what’s next for them, no matter what. Others, myself included, feel that—while another game in that world does sound awesome—the original is perfect, and trying to add to it could be damaging to the overall story.

Continue reading to see what Naughty Dog says about what’s next for them, as well as where they stand on The Last of Us being released on PlayStation 4.

As for what’s next, creative director Neil Druckmann said he and game director Bruce Straley have been trying to figure that out:

“We have started brainstorming some stuff. To be honest, some of them are sequel ideas, and some of them are brand new IP – we’ve spent the last few weeks brainstorming new IP.”

If you’re hoping to see the game released on the PlayStation 4 (it was released exclusively on the PS3 right before the next-gen console hit stores), well, that hasn’t been decided yet (or at least not announced). Of this topic Druckmann only said “It’s something that we’ll figure out as we move forward.” Considering how popular the game was and is still you’d think the port to PS4 would be a no-brainer…then again, with PlayStation Now not far off, they may just decide it’s best to let it live on there.

If you’re like me, all of this makes you wonder “but what about Uncharted 4?!” The game was teased along with the Last of Us DLC at the PS4 launch event, and is still on the way. Naughty Dog is one of the best game makers on the planet right now, which of course means some growing is in order. Because of this, they now have two separate teams: one working on the next-gen Uncharted sequel and the other set to work on whatever they decide to do next.

Going back to the possible Last of Us sequel, it seems the best option would be to tell a completely different story in that same world. Joel and Ellie’s story has been told, and if they do in fact decide to make a sequel, it makes the most sense to tell the story of others who also fight to survive in that harsh and unforgiving world. Only if they can figure out a story compelling enough to at least match that of the first game, too; if they can’t come up with a story that good, it’s probably best to put their efforts into a brand new IP (intellectual property), which is what I assume is their gameplan.

What do you think? Would you rather play a sequel to The Last of Us, or would you like to see something brand new from Naughty Dog?
