In a line of new ongoing series from Top Cow, Death Vigil stands out for one important reason: Stjepan Sejic. In this present-day fantasy/horror comic, Sejic is not only able to show off his impressive artistic abilities — as he has with many Top Cow titles before — but his skillful storytelling is on display as well.
Death Vigil #1 is a 40-page explosion of supernatural mayhem. With an overflow of the occult, demons, and tears in the fabric of the universe, only certain beings have the power to protect humanity from falling prey to these unleashed evils: The Vigil; those who have died but are given another chance and led in their fight by Death herself.
I hadn’t heard much about Death Vigil before deciding to review the first issue, but learning that Sejic would be the illustrator was my first hint that I needed to check it out. His use of strong lines, distinctive color schemes, and ability to harness emotion through his character’s expressions and movement are what always draw me to his comics, and are all beautifully executed aspects within Death Vigil #1. I was not, however, too familiar with Sejic’s writing capabilities. Well, that has changed – and for the better!
Sejic has crafted a well thought-out, engaging story of good versus evil with more than just one unique twist. His characters are believable and likeable, easily portraying a healthy combination of drama, humor, and devastation. The modern world mixed with unknown realms, makes for an exciting adventure with multiple possibilities and avenues to explore.
If Death Vigil #1 is any indication, this is going to be a fun title to follow with Stjepan Sejic at the helm.
