Guillermo del Toro at the Crimson Peak Gothic Gallery

Nerdist News’ Jessica Chobot moderated Legendary Pictures’ San Diego Comic-Con Hall H panel on Friday and introduced Guillermo del Toro, who premiered the teaser trailer for his gothic horror film Crimson Peak, starring Mia Wasikowska, Tom Hiddleston, Charlie Hunnam, and Jessica Chastain.

Chobot asked what attracted del Toro to return to the world of gothic horror. Del Toro said he wanted to make a movie that blended two sides of his personality, the painterly style of his Spanish-language films and the FX heavy, action side of films like Hellboy. When Universal offered him Crimson Peak, he thought it was a perfect opportunity to jump back into the genre. He encouraged everyone to visit the Crimson Peak experience at the Legendary booth at SDCC, describing it as “fucking awesome.” He apologised that he didn’t bring any stars with him, as the film is still in an early stage of production, but promised that next year at SDCC, he’ll bring the whole cast, including “Tom fucking Hiddleston,” whom he described as “incredibly nice.”

He then presented a teaser that featured a montage of shots of the eerie details of the house itself, over which Tom Hiddleston‘s voice could be heard saying “A House is a living thing, and over time it holds onto things…even things it shouldn’t,” followed by a shots of Mia Wasikowska’s character cowering in fear on a bed as disembodied, dark, inhuman hand clutches her face. There’s also glimpses of Hiddleston, seen with long black hair bellowing in the wind, Hunnam, and Chastain.

Del Toro described Crimson Peak as “A movie that comes close to living paintings.” It was labor of love to create the three-story-high set, and he spent a year designing it to the ultimate detail. He wanted the freedom to tackle a great adult story for a female lead, and let us see her become her own person. He described it as a romance and a thriller, with very brutal moments, with scary ghosts, and even scarier people.

He apologized for the fact that the panel didn’t allow for a question and answer portion, but he wanted to pose two questions himself to the audience, to get their reaction.

“Hellboy 3?” he asked. The SDCC crowd erupted with a burst of enthusiastic cheering.

“At the Mountains of Madness?” he posed. The crowd again cheered just as wild.

Crimson Peak opens October 16th 2015
