Fans have longed for the day that Spider-Man would join up with The Avengers to save the world from certain doom, but as long as the webslinger stays with Sony and the rest of the heroes stay over at Marvel, that dream might as well be shattered. Of course since this the age of the internet, rumors can start quickly with just a snap of your fingers.
One rumor that is starting is that Sony is working out a deal with Marvel Studios to refocus their franchise hero into the box office smash that it once was. Hit the jump for more.
Here’s the quote from Drew McWeeny over at HitFix.
While I can’t get the confirmations I need to verify the story, I’m hearing that there are some very cool “Spider-Man” plans being discussed that would help Sony refocus their enormously important franchise while also opening up some connections in the onscreen Marvel movie universe that would blow fandom’s minds. Will it work out? I don’t know. I would love to be able to state for sure that it’s happening. What seems clear from what I’ve heard is that Marvel wants to be able to play with all of their characters, and if they can make that work creatively and on a corporate level, they will, and that means the world gets bigger again.
While Marvel does hold the rights to a majority of their characters, they are still without their big hitters like Spider-Man, X-Men, Fantastic Four, and their respective villains and supporting characters. But this would be an interesting move should it happen. For one thing it could lead up to a more faithful adaptation of the Infinity Gauntlet story arc.
There are some who suggest that if this happens after Avengers 3, it could lead to a Civil War film adaptation.
But whether or not this is true, Marvel Studios says they have plans that run until 2021. How the addition of Spider-Man could change those plans remains to be seen.
